Voters here aren’t interested in blatant attacks on “ObamaCare.” The healthcare law and President Obama are viewed relatively favorably. However, specifics about the healthcare legislation -- the impact on Medicare, taxes and the cost of care – can be addressed as stand-alone issues without using the terms ObamaCare, the President’s Healthcare Law and the Affordable Care Act.
This is a rural, Central Valley district ecompassing Stanislaus County and part of San Joaquin County. Only the San Joaquin County portion of the district is new to Denham, as he has represented Stanislaus County either in the State Legislature or in Congress.
Voters here are pessimistic about the direction of the country and narrowly disapprove of President Obama’s job performance. They have a strong unfavorable opinion of Congress as a whole and of Nancy Pelosi.
Economic issues, especially jobs and the lack thereof, will be the driving issues in this election.
Jeff Denham is a veteran and self made businessman, growing Almonds on his Central Valley farm. He has fought against wasteful government spending in Congress and to protect the needs of Central Valley farmers. He has stood up to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats in Washington.
Jose Hernandez is from the small San Joaquin County town of French Camp and went on to become the first Mexican-American in outerspace as a NASA Astronaut. Most recently, he lived in Houston, Texas and claims to be moving back to the District to run for Congress. Hernandez’ entire campaign is based around his life story and making sure the American Dream is available for all kids, just as it was for him.
Houston, We Have a Problem He claims being recruited by Barack and Michele Obama to run for this seat and has stated he would welcome them both to the district to campaign for him. He hasn’t lived in the district for several years and this is important to voters in the Central Valley. What few public appearances he’s made, sometimes in his NASA flight suit, reveal him to be nothing more than an empty suit.
